Kip Reynolds and his team were ready for round two. I could no longer maintain the pain shield, and knew I was in big trouble. He was madder than mad and would stop at nothing to get his hands on my secret: a secret I had already decided I would take with me to the grave, toes or no toes.

“Well, I can see you are going to make this much harder on yourself than you need to.”

“I’m not going to show you. Period.”

“Have you any idea how long the human body can withstand torture, Echo? Weeks.”

We didn’t have weeks. “That long? You don’t think my sister isn’t already on her way back here?” I watched him with that little ditty. “Empath. Remember, Einstein? You’ve been lying all along. Douche.”

He rose, stared at me a second and then backhanded me, splitting my bottom lip open. “Your father will corral her shortly. She used the last of her power to knock him into tomorrow, but he has a bead on her. It’s only a matter of time.”

“Well then, settle in, Dr. Mengele, because time is all you and I have now.”

He nodded to Boltcutter, who wedged my next toe between the blades. “Then let’s step this up a notch, shall we?”

I looked down at the jaws of the bolt cutter, to Kip Reynolds, and back at the bolt cutters. As far as I was concerned, I was a dead woman. The only real question was how many body parts I would lose before that happened?

You’d be surprised of the thoughts that go through your mind when someone has a pair of bolt cutters to your body. I was staring at the blades, wondering how much this would hurt. What would Tip say or do if she found my lifeless body missing fingers and toes? Oh, there would be hell to pay…but not from her. Oh no, my ghetto girl would spend every last dime looking under every last rock trying to find this sack of shit.

Danica.

She would make sure he died in the most gruesome of manners.

How I missed her on this adventure. I’d made the decision to come alone in an effort to save those I love. Was that a mistake? Should I have brought her along to have my back as she’d been doing for over half my life? Would I even be in this predicament if she would have come?

I thought about her racing off to collect my niece, frantically trying to figure out how to reach me.

Charlie.

I had a niece…and I had saved her life. I had a sister, and I’d saved her as well. All-in-all, it had been a pretty good day.

“Are you hearing me?” Kip Reynolds yelled.

I looked up at him. “Oh. Were you talking? I’m sorry, I was thinking that my marathon days are over.” No sooner had I finished the final word, than the bolt cutters snapped shut, severing my second toe.

The scream I heard was mine, but it felt so detached—so foreign to me, I only knew it to be mine when I looked at the toe lying on the floor.
